What is ABA Therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically validated approach to understanding behavior and how it is affected by the environment. At Napa Behavioral Services, we use this evidence-based therapy to increase helpful behaviors and decrease those that are harmful or interfere with learning, focusing on meaningful progress for every child.

Naturalistic Teaching

Naturalistic teaching methods translate learning goals into the world where they matter most: everyday life. Instead of working at a desk, we follow your child's lead during play and daily routines, using their natural interests to create learning opportunities. This play-based approach ensures that the skills your child learns—whether it's asking for a toy or following a direction—naturally generalize to their home, school, and community environments.

Child-Led Learning: Interventions are built around what motivates your child in the moment.

Real-World Application: Skills are taught in the settings where they will actually be used.

Sustainable Growth: By weaving therapy into natural play, learning feels seamless and enjoyable.

Playtime Example: Requesting a Favorite Toy
If your child is reaching for a favorite dinosaur during play, the therapist waits for that natural moment of interest. Instead of a structured task, we simply pause and encourage a request—like reaching, a sign, or the word "Dino." When they communicate, the play continues immediately with the toy they wanted. It’s a real-life win that feels like pure fun, not work.

Discrete Trial Training (DTT)

Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is a highly structured ABA technique that breaks down complex skills into small, teachable 'trials.' By providing clear instructions and immediate reinforcement, DTT creates a predictable learning environment that helps children master foundational skills such as language, imitation, and social interaction with clinical precision. DTT can be used to acquire skills in the following domains: language acquisition, expressive communication, receptive and pragmatic communication etc.

Learning to Request a Snack: A Quick Example
Imagine your child wants a cracker. In a brief DTT trial, the therapist shows the cracker and asks, "What do you want?" When your child says "Cracker" (or uses a sign/device), they immediately get the cracker along with a high-five and enthusiastic praise. These trials are short, positive, and followed by a quick break to enjoy the snack, ensuring learning feels like a series of small, rewarding wins.

Expressive Language Acquisition

We focus on building functional communication through 'mand training'—teaching your child to express their needs and desires. Whether a learner is currently non-verbal, using signs, or expanding their spoken vocabulary, we use their natural motivation to foster real-world language skills that empower their independence and voice.

Non-Verbal Learners

Using mands to establish a first method of communication, such as signs, PECS, or speech-generating devices.

Vocal Learners

Shaping early vocalizations into clear words used to request items, decreasing frustration through clear expression.

Verbal Learners

Expanding requests into full sentences and complex descriptors, fostering social-functional language use.

Daily Living Skills & Independence

Moving beyond the clinical setting, we empower children to navigate their daily worlds with confidence. Our ABA-based independence training focuses on the essential skills that transform daily routines into moments of self-reliance and autonomy.

Time Management

Teaching the concept of order and routine, helping children understand transitions and manage their daily schedules.

🥗

Eating Skills

Focusing on independent feeding, utensil use, and expanding food preferences in a stress-free manner.

Toileting Skills

Providing compassionate support for toilet training, helping children master personal hygiene routines with dignity.

🏠

Community Skills

Navigating the community safely, from following safety rules in public to interacting politely in neighborhood settings.

Benefits of ABA

Skills Acquisition
Mastery of Vital Skills

ABA breaks down complex tasks into manageable steps, helping children master communication, social, and academic skills through structured repetition and positive reinforcement.

Behavioral Support
Reducing Challenging Behaviors

By identifying the root purpose of a behavior, we develop strategies that decrease challenging actions while teaching safer, more effective ways to communicate needs.

Independence
Fostering Autonomy

Therapy focuses on daily living skills and self-advocacy, empowering individuals to navigate their environments with confidence and greater independence.

Our Holistic Approach to ABA

We combine the structural integrity of Discrete Trial Training with the flexibility of Naturalistic Teaching. Our goal is to create a learning environment where your child feels safe, understood, and motivated to reach their full potential through compassionate, evidence-based care.
